EU Prolongs Myanmar Sanctions
In an official announcement, the Council of the European Union stated that the restrictive measures will continue to be enforced until April 30, 2027, after completing its yearly assessment of the sanctions framework.
These penalties are directed at 105 individuals and 22 entities associated with Myanmar’s military leadership. Those included in the list are subject to asset freezes and are prohibited from accessing financial funds or economic assets, while the individuals are additionally banned from traveling within the EU.
The European bloc also upholds wider limitations, such as an arms embargo, restrictions on exporting equipment that could be used for internal repression, and a ban on military training and cooperation with the armed forces, known as the Tatmadaw.
The EU once again expressed its “strongest condemnation” of the military’s actions following the 2021 coup, criticizing “continuing grave human rights violations” and “widespread restrictions on fundamental freedoms.” It further demanded “an end of all forms of violence” and called on authorities to free “all prisoners arbitrarily detained.”
