Central Myanmar Witnesses Air Raids

(MENAFN) Myanmar’s Air Force conducted aerial bombardments in the country’s central region, resulting in the deaths of no fewer than five civilians and leaving 13 others wounded, local news sources reported on Wednesday.

According to a local media outlet, fighter jets under the military regime struck Chatkan village in Pauk Township, located in the Magway Region, on Tuesday.

“One of the bombs landed on a shop, killing five people instantly,” a humanitarian aid worker in Chatkan said, adding that three of the 13 injured civilians were in “critical condition.”
An additional ten individuals also sustained injuries during the air assault.

The targeted locality is partly under the authority of the People’s Defense Force (PDF).
Established in 2021, the PDF serves as the military branch of Myanmar’s National Unity Government, which was formed to oppose the ruling junta following the Feb. 1, 2021 coup.

Previously, the PDF asserted that it had eliminated at least 18 junta troops in Thichauk village in Pauk on Feb. 4, while over 5,000 residents were compelled to abandon their homes because of air raids and armed confrontations in the vicinity.

Last month, the United Nations reported that at least 170 noncombatants lost their lives in upwards of 400 airstrikes carried out during Myanmar’s election period.

Fighting between ethnic armed groups has escalated as the nation continues to be gripped by internal strife nearly four years after the February 2021 military takeover.

The 2021 coup removed the democratically elected administration headed by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League of Democracy and thrust the country into more than four years of emergency governance.
