Muhammad Yunus Commends Turkish Support for Rohingya Refugees
(MENAFN) Bangladeshi Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus conveyed his “deep appreciation” on Monday to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and first lady Emine Erdogan for their unwavering support of the Rohingya population sheltering in Bangladesh.
Yunus shared his remarks during a meeting in Dhaka with a five-member Turkish parliamentary delegation led by Mehmet Akif Yilmaz, the chairperson of the Türkiye-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Prior to meeting Yunus, the delegation visited Rohingya camps in southeastern Cox's Bazar to observe the humanitarian efforts of Turkish institutions and non-governmental organizations, including a Turkish field hospital.
Since August 2017, Bangladesh has provided refuge to roughly 1.3 million Rohingya in Cox's Bazar, the majority of whom fled Myanmar following a military crackdown.
“The plight of the Rohingya community remains one of the most tragic humanitarian crises of our time. These people are suffering simply because they are Muslims, and their citizenship has been stripped away,” Yunus stated, highlighting the severe challenges faced by the displaced community.
During the discussions, both parties explored opportunities to enhance bilateral collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, and humanitarian initiatives.
“Since assuming this responsibility, I have focused on further deepening our close relationship with Türkiye,” Yunus remarked, praising President Erdogan and the first lady for their "continued support and solidarity with Bangladesh, particularly in humanitarian and development cooperation."
